Castle Books has been a community bookshop since 2016, although there has been a second-hand bookshop on the site for nearly 50 years. Today the shop operates entirely through the good will of a dedicated and dynamic group of volunteers (there are no paid staff) and is held in warm affection by both local customers and visitors to Totnes.

By keeping our overheads at a minimum, and through generous book donations from local supporters, we are able to offer a wide variety of pre-loved books at very affordable prices. We also buy good quality second-hand books for which we are happy to offer you a valuation - see here!

Alongside the bookshop we organise regular literary events for the local community, including a monthly book group and Open Mic Poetry group. Any profits are channelled back into the shop and the local community to support literary and other charitable causes.

Visitors from all over the world seek us out and nothing cheers us more than hearing customers exclaim over the discovery of a long sought after title or old childhood favourite. If you ever visit Totnes, be sure to pay us a visit. Who knows what you might find!
